Affordable healthcare counts.

I believe that access to healthcare is a basic human right. The office of the Utah Attorney General plays an important role in protecting those rights. As Utah's top attorney, I will respect and support the issues that are important to the people of this state. That includes access to health care. As the owner of a small Utah law firm, I have always provided health and dental insurance coverage to all of our employees even when personally covered through my wife’s employment.

Utahns who receive health insurance through the ACA  are in danger of losing their health care benefits. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) the federal government would provide 93 percent of funding for expanding Medicaid coverage in the State of Utah. Over half of Utahns voted for Proposition 3 to expand Medicaid. Ignoring the will of the people, Sean Reyes joined a lawsuit that will strip 195,000 men, women and children of their health insurance under the ACA. Instead of supporting the majority of voters in expanding health care, your Attorney General is actively using your tax dollars to take it away.

Defending his indifference to the needs of  working families, Mr. Reyes has claimed the “nation should focus its attention on finding real solutions to our broken health care system.” If Mr. Reyes’ lawsuit prevails, Utah working families that make too much money to qualify for Medicaid and too little money to afford health insurance will be left in the cold.   Abruptly tearing down the only health care these people have with no concrete alternative health care in place is reckless and misguided. As Attorney General I will support thoughtful and reasonable measures to make certain that every Utahn does not have to choose between affordable health care and rent or food.

I believe that access to healthcare is a basic human right. The office of the Utah Attorney General plays an important role in protecting those rights.
